I was admitted to the bar in 1979 and have practised as a litigation lawyer since that time.
After practising in all fields of court work in Auckland and Hawkes Bay, I joined Bell Gully’s litigation department in January 1986. In 1988, I became a partner of the firm.
I practised as a litigation partner of Bell Gully until 2004. During that time I was involved in a wide variety of commercial and other civil litigation, appearing in all courts in the New Zealand system. I also appeared in several South Pacific courts and participated in cases in Australia and the United States.
Since the late 1980s, I have maintained specialist expertise in aviation law. I have acted for aviation insurers, both airline and general aviation, and I have also represented many aviation operators. I have expertise in most aspects of aviation-related law.
In August 2004, I commenced practice as an independent barrister. Since that time, I have continued to conduct commercial and civil arbitrations and cases of most types in New Zealand courts and also, from time to time in courts in South Pacific countries. I have also acted for persons facing investigations and criminal charges by the Financial Markets Authority, the Commerce Commission, and the Serious Fraud Office.
I was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2013.
I was appointed Counsel Assisting the Havelock North Drinking Water Inquiry in September 2016.
